“You realize that our mistrust of the future makes it hard to give up the past.”
― Chuck Palahniuk
We often look at the changes and experiences of the present in contrast to the past. This gives us a sense of understanding. Things used to be one way and now they are different.
The new ways are often uncomfortable and scary so we chose to look back at the past as this bright gem and hold onto what was – remembering the good ole’ days.
We are then left with the illusion that the past was somehow better and the present or future is worse off – filled with doom, despair and emptiness. We wonder if the loss we experienced was it? Will there be another relationship, another career opportunity, another fill in the blank?
We prefer a past that we know and are familiar with over a future of unknowns, uncertainty and uncomfortable newness. But if we are honest with ourselves, there was a lot that wasn’t going well in the past and many of our needs that weren’t met. This shiny vision of the past or the good ole’ days is an illusion.
One that makes the future dreary or not good enough. We are choosing to see it a certain way and perhaps are not seeing the whole picture.
Focusing on the loss and how things used to be leaves us blinded to the future possibilities of what can be. Loss and change are constant, however, they don’t need to remain empty – there is always more to come. More relationships, more love, more connection, more meaning, more experiences.
This is a truth of life, the sun will rise again tomorrow, the seasons will change, the year will end and then a new one will begin. When it is time to move forward or face changes – do you carry the shadow of the past with you ?
Are you willing to welcome the greatest truth? That maybe you are going to be ok no matter what.
Change is uncomfortable and may break your heart AND YET there is still a bright future ahead. The possibility to fall in love again, the possibility to love yourself more, the possibility to enjoy and experience new ways of being, living, loving and learning.
I know that you are familiar with the past and that holds a level of safety and security for you and my question is are you willing to embrace the future and discover what else is possible and what that “more” is to your life?
We already know what the past looks like and feels like and even if we long for some of those memories, it’s ALSO possible to open ourselves to the new with the inner knowing that we will be ok. No matter what happens, there are more possibilities awaiting you.
Peace, Love and Light,
Orly
