Untold Stories

“There is no greater agony bearing an untold story within you.” Maya Angelou

Do you ever get tired of it all? Exhausting yourself with the same repeating negative thoughts and beliefs to the point of not even caring anymore? It seems that sometimes the only way to move forward is when we exhaust ourselves to this exaggerated point. I have done it many times and over time it impacts all areas of your health.

During these times, I find the tool of therapeutic writing to be extremely supportive. The thoughts and ideas are already repeating and rather than leaving them to hang out in our mind, grab a pen or your computer and start releasing through writing.

The intention with writing is not to read it or understand it or come to any conclusion, it is simply to move the energy, release it, and ultimately to separate from it.

In the past, when I was experiencing a lot of anger and didn’t know what to do with it,  I decided to write. I wrote and wrote and wrote about everything I was angry about and everything that was bothering me. And then out of the blue, I started laughing.

I read what I wrote and somehow the feelings or attachment + identification with what had felt so powerful wasn’t there anymore. It felt like words and not this heavy emotion. The writing helped me to move through the feelings but also helped me to see it from a different perspective.

For this particular case, it was anger and hurt that I carried with me for many years. I had gotten to a place where I had spoken about it, cried about it and remembered it ENOUGH times.

I realized that everything I was writing  was completely valid and yet part of my experience wasn’t the total TRUTH – it had parts of truth in it. But it wasn’t the whole truth and when I let myself separate from it and watch it on my computer screen, I felt like there was a greater truth available.

And it didn’t matter what strong points I was making and who was wrong or right – what mattered was that I saw it from a different place. And that set me free.

This is not an experience I have had with every struggle or challenge but I will never forget how therapeutic writing was and how freeing it felt to detach from these strong perspectives I had about myself and life.
