B- Work is Better Then A+

“Perfection is a 20 ton shield that we lug around thinking it will protect us when, in fact, it’s the thing that is really preventing us from taking flight.” Brene Brown

I once worked with a coach who told me to focus on B – work. I was surprised, why would anyone try to do B- work instead of A + work? We had talked about perfectionism, burn out, inconsistency – things I had been struggling with for years.

It was that go, go, go and then that hard stop that felt like giving up, no longer caring and completely disconnecting from whatever “it” was.

This was a common pattern in my life. I would hit full speed on getting into shape, finding a job, or even in a creative project – giving it 120 percent and then things wouldn’t go as I hoped or would take longer and I would burn out. I even have done this with healing and personal development work!

It can be confusing when we are taught that we should fight our way to success or never give up. Put your all into it, hard work is everything…these are common ideals we have been taught.

However, if you are not staying on track and consistently “off ramping” as my teacher liked to say – perhaps your aim is off.

No one is ever 100% perfect, no one is ever 100% on track, AND  no is ever 100% authentic. These ideals perhaps meant to motivate us are not humanly possible.

Taking it down a notch and reducing the pressure to be perfect or give 100% and thus focusing on completing B- work will get you further ahead than focusing on the A+.

This will also ruffle your feathers, as I learned from my own experience,  it’s never about what you think it is about and those underlying feelings and fears will try to fight you once you begin to change. This is part of the process.

Change is always uncomfortable even if it is a change that is for your best. If you find yourself getting really into something only to exhaust yourself and then lose interest it may be time for you to switch gears and aim for the B-.
